One of the most glaring problems I’ve observed in masonry is the blatant racism that runs rampant thought the “brotherhood.” for instance, I was at a lodge meeting about a week ago. There were two petitions, or membership applications, that were being voted on. Votes are cast using a private ballot box so no one can tell for certain how anyone voted. One of the two candidates had an obviously Middle Eastern name, and he was rejected. I would’ve thought nothing of it, but that a small group of men were talking about the vote during the social hour after the meeting. They said they had no intention of “handing the lodge over to a bunch of Muslim terrorists.”
This is not an isolated incident. I was visiting another lodge in the area a month ago, and I saw another disturbing display. This lodge was initiating an African American man – a very rare event indeed. As soon as the man entered the room and the masons saw him, a group of them stood up, took off their Masonic aprons, and left the lodge room. Afterwards, they were lobbing several racial slurs which shall not be mentioned here. They also said that “they should stick to their own kind, in their own lodges.”
You see, masonry has been segregated from the beginning. There are the “regular” lodges and the “colored” lodges, founded by Prince Hall, and specifically intended to be a place for minorities to practice the “brotherhood of man” supposedly practiced by their counterparts in regular lodges.
The incident a month ago is what inspired me to start this blog. This is exactly what I want to expose in this organization. I know that other masons will read this. I hope to hear of their experiences on this topic. I also know that nonmembers will also read this, and I want to hear their reactions to these deplorable acts.
